Poem Body:
We were sold
A dream of Equality
The word ringing out
Like a politician’s promise
Full and deep and
Most of all
Heavy
Education!
Marched beside it
Head high, waving
Smiling benignly
On those who met
With approval:
They crossed all their t’s
And dotted the i’s
Colored only
Between the lines
With “real” colors
No purple
Hippopotamus
To mar the page
They stifled the urges
To point out
The absurdity
Of making a cartoon coloring-book character
